Course Overview

This training programme is designed to provide operational personnel with the required underpinning scientific knowledge that applies to thermal conversion processes such as combustion and electrical generation. This programme introduces subjects useful in a variety of industries including, but not limited to; power production, energy from waste, marine propulsion, brewing, oil and gas, chemical production and district heating. The type of facilities and equipment covered by this programme may produce electricity, steam, heat or a combination of these. They may use a variety of different technologies and fuel sources which may include; coal, oil, gas, biomass or waste products.

Course Content

This course is modular with each module focusing on a certain topic and lasting for one day. It can be delivered in a variety of formats ranging from one day per month to a one week block and anything in between.

The five module topics are:

  1. Thermodynamics and Steam Generation
  2. Combustion Chemistry
  3. Electrical Theory
  4. Environmental Considerations
  5. Boiler Water Chemistry

Each programme module will be assessed using assignments and exercises carried out during each module. To achieve the full programme, learners must achieve a minimum pass grade of 60% for all five modules.
